Eligibility

An applicant must be a citizen of the United States, either native-born or naturalized, and must be enrolled in one of the Participating Institutions and due to graduate during the same academic year as the deadline, or be a student who graduated from one of those institutions within the past 12 months. A Churchill Scholar must hold a bachelor's degree on taking up the award. The separate Kanders Churchill Scholarship in Science Policy is open to graduates of any US college or university with a bachelor's degree in science, mathematics or engineering, with no time limit since graduation, and is applied for through the Cambridge application instead of the Foundation.

How you apply

Applicants first select an eligible Cambridge course, then register on the Foundation's online application portal (opening in May) and submit the online application with recommendation letters, one of which must be external. Each institution runs an internal deadline weeks ahead of the Foundation deadline and can nominate up to two applicants. Applicants must also apply to the University of Cambridge with Churchill College as first choice, and an application is not complete until the undergraduate institution nominates the candidate.

What you receive

One year of Master's study (MPhil or MASt) at the University of Cambridge, fully funded: tuition, roundtrip airfare to the UK, visa fees and health surcharge, and a stipend set higher than the UK Research Council standard, plus eligibility to apply for a $4,000 special research grant. The Foundation states the total value is over $80,000, and Scholars also receive a science communication workshop, a science policy seminar and guided visits to Chartwell and the Churchill War Rooms.
